A Coffee Oasis
She wakes me when I'm tired
or just want one more z.
She perks me up,
smile in a cup.
My best friend's name?
Coffee.
I'm on my third cup today. Cold, but still delicious. What is it about coffee that is so amazing? Oh yeah, the caffeine, the aroma and the deep flavor. Now I've stepped over the edge of Slice of Life and entered television commercial status.
Okay, so the reason I really need coffee today? My room is like an oasis on the shore of an iceburg. The heating and cooling system in my building is completely out of wack. You walk in my room it is HOT! You walk out to the hallway, you freeze. If I had my choice, I sort of would rather be more on the chilly side. At least I can throw on a sweater. But heat, there just isn't much you can do about that. I keep finding myself in the middle of an eye flutter while listening to students read. I'm so tired from the heat that I can't focus. You can imagine how it's working for my students. It should be better tomorrow. They are tinkering. I figure as long as there is enough coffee in the world, I should be fine.
Did I mention I love tea too? :)

I absolutely love your poem! I am totally irritated by the heating/cooling system as well. My classroom was Tahiti last week and we couldn't take off enough clothing to cool down. This week? North pole! The kids are actually looking for Santa...they just know he must be nearby. And don't even get me started on the fact that it's too cold outside for the kids to go out. Indoor recess all week? I think I might be feeling sick. ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful poem, Betsy. Coffee is my friend too!
ReplyDeleteCan you open some windows to let a slice of winter in?
Love the poem! The aroma of coffee...I love, just not the taste. The coffee/bread isle at Walmart used to be my favorite until they moved everything. I hope their tinkering works!
ReplyDeleteWhy can't schools ever get the temperature right? I'm afraid I'd be happier having too much heat. Iced tea seems to be the beverage you need in the hot zone. Hope it's not freezing tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteYour building sounds like mine - hooray for coffee at just the right temperature to make the world feel right again.
ReplyDeleteLove that 'smile in a cup' Betsy, & all the rest too! So I don't understand how every.single.school I've ever been in is like this, extremes! My office is cold, the hall is not, the bathrooms freeze, downstairs is too warm… Very strange! Hope your problem is fixed soon!
ReplyDeleteso great! good job!
ReplyDeleteOde to coffee, I love it! I wasn't sure anyone else loved coffee like I do. Great poem!
ReplyDeleteWhen asked recently what my favorite small household appliance was, I answered without hesitation, "Coffee maker!" So we are kindred spirits. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun poem! And I'm with you on preferring to be cold. My classroom can get toasty too and it is so hard to focus. I want to go back to the years of teaching kindergarten and have a short nap!
ReplyDeleteAre there naps in kindergarten somewhere? Not in Ohio.
DeleteI love your poem - the coffee - or a cup of tea -when it's cold inside or outside is indeed a warm and comforting friend. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteAs I read your poem, I was thinking this was about your daughter. I think you had a twitter conversation the other night about going to bed. I hope your heat is figured out soon. I would be in trouble if I had heating problems, I don't drink caffeine.
ReplyDeleteI remember having that happen, and I opened a window. The custodian wasn't too pleased because I was wasting energy! Ha! Wasting energy! And the heat up to 80 isn't wasting energy anyway? In these days you would think they would want to have the rooms too cold to save energy.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a coffee person (can't even stand the smell), but I love your little poem! It has just the perky feel that a cup of coffee must give you!
ReplyDeleteThe heat would make me sleepy too! I have a colleague that loves to crank up the heat in her room and I tell her all the time that she will put the kiddos to sleep. She was surprised when I told her! Hope they fix it soon, otherwise you'll be up all night!
ReplyDeleteYou have your " smile in a cup" to help you cope. I love coffee and tea, too. Boo...hiss...for just about every school's heating/cooling system! It is one of those universal mysteries why this can NOT be fixed. :( I hope tomorrow is better. :)Your friend coffee will be faithful no matter.
ReplyDeleteThe worst part about pregnancy was limiting the coffee. I SO relate to your poem. Good luck with getting that temperature right. Please make spring come sooner!
