Day 8 of 31 #SOL16

I'm in a different wing of the building now and have a big window that faces out toward the kindergarten and preschool playground. There is a LARGE puddle right outside my window. Today I was standing near my computer and noticed kids playing really close by. I looked out to find a preschool student practically making "snow angels" in the puddle. A few more kids joined in and started splashing and playing. I walked over to watch them and saw their teachers coming toward the area. We caught each other's eye and all we could do was smile. What can you really do at that point? Not much other than smile and maybe giggle a bit. I watched as the little kiddos s   l   o   w   l   y walked away toward the line filing back into the school, dripping wet. A few of my students began to notice and came to the window. They started waving back and forth. It made me a little sad for my students. It wouldn't be deemed appropriate if a third grader went and jumped into a puddle. I understand the reasoning but it's still a little sad to think their puddle jumping days might be over. We expect so much of these little people and I keep finding that I need to remind myself they are eight. I think we might need to round up some bubbles this week and go rekindle our love of wonder.

  1. So true. I hope their puddle jumping is not quite over yet. Today I reminded myself that my kiddos are fifteen. Still, so young, fifteen.

  2. I can so relate to this! I am a special needs preschool aide and have a third grader at home. She enjoys going to work with me - I think it's a chance to be little for a day and not being laughed at. I love that your kids were waving - how fun was that! Great slice!

  3. Oh! It is sad isn't it? I teach 3rd also, and sometimes wonder, are we letting them be kids or are we trying to always get them ready for the next grade!

  4. I've been struck by how little my 3rd graders really are as they've been bringing in toys to share at our morning meeting. Little ponies and Star Wars figures.... Still so much play in them. Love this slice!

  5. Aw, puddle jumping days. When do those things end? I hope those third graders still have a few more puddles to jump in!

  6. I think you should have them all bring their rain boots...there will be plenty of puddles to jump in after tomorrow's 2 inches of rain! :) Take your bubbles too, for a little extra fun!

  7. I love watching the preschoolers outside my window. They are so carefree! You are so right why do our 9 year old children need to be treated like middle schoolers? Bubbles sounds wonderful!

  8. I totally agree - water and kids - you can keep them apart. It's magnetic. So, don't even try. It is the essence of childhood. To indulge, to play, to explore. What a better way than by playing in water.
