Childhood Dreams

Childhood dreams
True or unseen?

Wanting to be
Anything we see.

Today at lunch I was sitting with a few of my fellow K teachers and we were all sharing what, as children, we wanted to be when we grew up. We had all kinds of different ideas: veterinarian, country singer, hotel room cleaner, psychiatrist. It reminded me that when we are young our perspectives are very different. It also made me wonder, how did we all end up becoming teachers, so many paths, so many reasons, and here we all are, together.
What did you want to be when you grew up, (are you still deciding?...sometimes I think I still am).

  1. I will admit to wanting to be several things as a child that I would never do as an adult. However, from the time that I seriously thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, it was always a teacher. I can see myself taking on different roles within that arena, but I don't think there is another path for me. This is where I feel like I belong. I think, for me, it was the inspiration of some really outstanding teachers that brought me here.

  2. Teacher was my only thought. Did it for 32 years, now I still teach but it is different the "kids" are older and should know better.
Were you wanting to be the country singer?

  3. I have thought about this so often...as a young girl - elementary - I wanted only to be a teacher. As I progressed through middle school, high school, somehow the message I received was that there were more important things to be than a teacher. I went on to get a Master's in International Studies, worked professionally many years, until my own boys were in preschool and I got "hit" full on -"good gracious, this is what I was meant to do...this is what really counts..." I went back to school to become certified to teach... I fear society is still sending a negative message about teaching...

  4. I wanted to be a ballet dancer, but when I started school I knew my dream would not come true. Since my mom was a teacher I figured that this job would be good too. My two older daughters have said that they would never become teachers. We'll wait and see.
