My Baker

It is the end of a long day. A long day with very few problems, which is quite wonderful.

I didn't get home until around seven this evening. After a quick phone call to my mom, a hair tie, and a drink of water I'm finally sitting. My daughter and I love to watch baking shows. So I am sitting on my couch watching Kids Baking Championship on Hulu.

If I'm being honest, I am not the best baker. I enjoy eating baked things. I enjoy having baked--because I enjoy eating baked things. However, measuring ingredients, eh...not my cup of tea. I'd rather mix up something delicious with a little whimsy and the plan can be the inspiration, not the rule. My daughter, however, LOVES to bake. She is a baker extraordinaire. Since she became old enough to do several steps on her own I love letting her loose on cupcakes, muffins, and cookies. Her creativity pours out when she gets going with frosting and sprinkles. I pride myself on being her professional taster.

At the end of this long and lovely month of writing, I will likely share a picture or two of my little baker. Her birthday is at the end of the month and she loves to make a treat for school. I'm never sure what she'll come up with and there are lots of indecisive ideas along the way until she lands on one. We'll see if this show ends up inspiring some baking experiences in the future!

  1. I wish I had the ability to just let my daughters' bake. I would be worried though as to what would be in said bakery item. They are so creative and free spirited and I don't want to squash that, but I am not sure I would be brave enough to eat what they make!

  2. I love how even after a long day, you make the time to bake with your daughter! I also love baking/ cooking shows... cooking is more my hobby. Like you said, measuring isn't my favorite either. The other day I needed to add 1 teaspoon of salt and I added one TABLESPOON. There is a big difference! Enjoy your baking time together :)

  3. Our son loved being in the kitchen. He always (almost) made wonderful food and always an amazing mess. Today he does most of the cooking for his family but I'll always recall fondly his first attempt at rye bread.

  4. I love watching that show. I particularly love how Valerie and Duff talk to the kids. Critical and helpful with a healthy spoonful of respect and kindness. (OMG! IT's late here too and I'm not doing well with the cooking metaphors. Are they even metaphors? OMG! I should go to bed. Ha!) Anyway, I digress... Maybe Janie will be on the show one day! I would totally watch her.

If you want an amusing cooking-related slice, you should see what I wrote today. I threw my mom under the bus with it (though she knew I was going to write it before I did... permission is key!), I think you'll find it amusing. She could be on "Worst Cooks in America."

  5. How fun to watch a little baker blossom! My nephew loves making baking projects -- though his aren't always edible!

  6. I tend to agree with you, not too much of a baker but love being a professional taster FOR a baker. This sounds like a great way to end a busy day.

  7. So interesting when a phrase can carry so much meaning..."a hair tie"...and I can automatically picture the whole scene and feel relaxed myself!

  8. I love this! I can picture Janie working away in the kitchen, trying to get it just like she wants it and smiling the whole time.

My girls like the Chopped cooking challenge show. It's definitely interesting how it translates to our own kitchen. Luckily, I get to choose the three items in the basket so I have a bit of control over what ends up in the final creation! I also get to be the judge and host so I can ask them to explain everything they put in said creation before it hits my lips. :) Life is good!
